 Pune's COVID-19 Situation: A May 2025 Overview

As of May 2025, Pune has experienced a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, mirroring trends observed in other parts of Maharashtra. Between May 12 and May 18, the city reported 53 new infections,

contributing to a total of 80 cases for the month.

This marks a significant increase from the mere four cases recorded in April .The Times of India

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has identified a new case in the city, prompting health authorities to implement precautionary measures. Residents are urged to wear masks, maintain social distancing, and seek medical advice if symptoms appear .Maharashtra Times

The resurgence is attributed to the JN.1 variant, which has been linked to a rise in cases across Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong. Symptoms associated with this variant include sore throat, fever, runny nose, dry cough, fatigue, headache, and loss of taste or smell. Experts emphasize that while the variant is more transmissible, it does not appear to cause more severe illness. Vaccination remains effective, and booster doses are recommended for vulnerable populations .Navbharat Times

Despite the increase in cases, hospitalizations and fatalities have remained low. The state has reported 87 cases in 2025, with no associated deaths. The positivity rate has risen from 0.6% in April to 12% in May, but health authorities consider the situation non-alarming, viewing COVID-19 as endemic .Reddit+4Navbharat Times+4The Times of India+4The Times of India

In response, the PMC has activated 184 survey teams and is prepared with 489 beds, 542 oxygen beds, 69 ICU beds, and 62 ventilators. The focus remains on early detection, home isolation, and monitoring, with private hospitals also on standby .PUNE PULSE - Trusted-Connected-Targeted
